Socks, Annoyance And Change

Socks, I love new socks. I have never been disappointed getting socks as a gift. I for a few years now haven't bothered to match my socks other than the one-off pair or the random dress socks. This usually works out because when I buy socks, I purchase a few pairs of the same kind. Some black socks and some white socks. When I need a pair, I grab whatever color I am after and they match. It was my cheat code for laundry day and a time saver.
I ended up with three different kinds of black socks. I usually wear those for work. So every morning after my shower was done, coffee started and teeth brushed it was time for my sock saga. A perpetual game of go fish that felt like it took far longer than it should. The game of sock catch and release was a morning frustration for longer than I care to admit. I had black socks with no branding on the toes, black socks with silver branding and the coveted black socks with gold branding. They are a thicker sock and more comfortable for wearing with winter boots.
Every day the cycle would repeat. Hunting for a matching pair. My time saving cheat code turned into a minor frustration but a frustration nonetheless. Every day I put myself through this. Until one day I sat down and dumped out my sock drawer. I looked over every sock and discarded the ones with holes. I sorted them into piles of dress socks, white socks and three different piles of black socks. It dawned on me the unbranded socks were older and less comfortable. I in fact could not remember the last time I wore them. But they plagued my morning routine.
I disposed of the unbranded socks. I matched the silver branded and gold branded socks with a suitable mate and left the white socks un matched as I only have one kind of them. If you have made it this far, you are probably asking, "What is going on with Bishop?". I have a point, I promise. I had to cast aside my old habits to deal with this little but daily frustration. My sock purge took all of twenty minutes, when I had probably spent over an hour sock hunting on the various mornings.
What daily frustration are you living with that twenty minutes could eliminate? It might not be a sock problem. But is probably some simple task that causes daily annoyance that you just deal with. I am fairly certain we all live like this to some degree. Just accepting of these minor annoyances day after day when getting rid of them takes some simple problem-solving and a miniscule amount of effort and time. But as creatures of habit, we can't see past just accepting things as they are because that's how they have been for a long time.
We are all far too often victims of our own inability to hit pause and actually ponder the things that bother us. If I hadn't done a sock purge, would life fall apart? No, but it has made me just that little bit less annoyed every morning. I think you will find that doing something like this can have a snowball effect. You take care of one little thing, and then you might just open your eyes to the other day-to-day annoyances that you have been living with. Suddenly with not a lot of effort you can tackle a few things and live a life just a little less annoyed and gain some time back in that daily routine.
Is this advice life changing? Slightly yes. We live in a world of stress, annoyances and often disappointment. Why subject yourself to more of that than you have to? Little life changes can truly be a butterfly effect of change for the better. So I ask you dear reader, what daily problem can you solve that will make life just a little better right now?
